Background

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a leading international independent medical humanitarian organisation, providing expert medical relief to vulnerable populations at times of conflict or disaster. Operating in over 71 countries, MSF provides both life-saving emergency relief and longer-term assistance to make basic healthcare services available to the most vulnerable or excluded communities. MSF coordinates the Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the central Mediterranean which provide lifesaving activities and basic assistance operating with own vessel.

Scope and objectives of the position

Participate in defining, planning and managing logistics activities and programs in the field in accordance with MSF protocols as well as coordinate human and material related resources needed in order to contribute to the proper development of the and optimise the impact of the medical projects.

General Accountabilities

In collaboration with Project Coordinator and Logistics Coordinator:

  • Participate in the development of project policies, annual plans, project proposals, and budget reviews.
  • Implement and maintain an appropriate supply chain for the project.
  • Ensure the installation and maintenance of functional office spaces and living facilities in adequate conditions, along with required equipment.
  • Monitor and manage the project's material resources.
  • Implement monitoring and reporting tools for logistics activities.
  • Supervise support activities (communications, transport, energy, etc.) and logistics tasks related to medical objectives (construction, water and sanitation).
  • Plan recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and development processes for logistics staff.

Specific accountabilities

  • Develop systems and support structures that ensure the Logistics department functions to ensure continuous and quality support of the SAR operations, whilst ensuring cohesion between the vessel and onshore needs.
  • Asses the needs of the SAR operations and develop preventative maintenance and reactionary systems that are adapted to the needs of the operations, applying MSF standards where applicable and beneficial.
  • Strengthen the Supply department, ensuring that: policy framework is beneficial and adapted to the context, that systems throughout the supply chain are adhered to and adapted to the operations and transferable between changing crew and covering onshore staff.
  • Covering for the position of Logistics Coordinator and vessel manager as required.

Requirements 

Education

  • Required: diploma or professional experience in a technical area

Experience

  • Desirable: MSF experience
  • Desirable: MSF Logistics Team Leader experience, desirably with coaching experience within non-standard contexts.

Languages

  • Fluent written and spoken English essential (C1)
  • Desirable: Italian (C1)

Knowledge

  • Highly desirable: Customs and export knowledge within the Italian maritime context.  
  • Maritime or boating technical knowledge is a plus.

Conditions 

Contract: Fixed term contract 01/04/2026 – 31/12/2026 (09 months - renewable), full-time. Level I of Italian CCNL Commercio Terziario Distribuzione e Servizi.

Candidates should hold a work permit to work in Italy.

Gross Annual Salary: euro 38.500 – 41.580 depending on MSF experience of the candidate
